After hearing the showstopping abilities of saachisen (Saachi Sen) on grand, evocative single “The Gap”, you would be forgiven for assuming she’s devoted every fabric of her energy to her artistry. But in actual fact, the Indian-born, London-raised singer-songwriter counts electronic engineering among her skillset, as a university graduate and big advocate for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).
Starting as she means to go on with debut single under the moniker saachisen, she recruited leading pop-music personnel for its production, with sound engineering from Ramera Abraham (Little Mix, Adele) and mixing from Amanda Merdzan (Tom Walker, Freya Ridings). Saachi, a former chorister, fuses the rich, classical elements of choral music – euphonious harmonies, rousing piano arrangements – with the acoustic guitar, subdued electronic beats and delicate bass of the tender pop music she loves, making for a rounded, commanding sound, with serious intent.
On the single, Saachi says: “I wrote ‘The Gap’ shortly after graduating university, when I, like so many other grads, were hit by this overwhelming feeling of uncertainty. I was also missing someone I’d grown close to at uni who had moved away, and I had just started dating somebody new; I think I knew deep down it was just an attempt to distract from that strange, empty feeling I was experiencing.”
